Think About the Children
It seems lately you cannot read the news without gruesome details of children being abducted from their home. I started paying more attention to these sad events with the abduction of 9year old Jessica Lunsford. She was taken from her home on February 23, 2005. He grandparents had tucked her into bed around 10 PM. Her grandfather woke up around 4 AM and didn’t notice anything amiss. The next morning, her father found her gone. John Couey, a convicted sex offender, was arrested. He had been able to enter the Lunsford’s house through an unlocked door. He took her to his stepsister’s house, only 150 yard away from her home. Couey had not registered when he came to stay at his stepsister’s house, which means those around were unaware of the vile man living in their area. Jessica’s case is not the only case where a sex offender has struck twice.Sarah Lunde, 13, was last seen on April 9. She had been left home alone, and her mother’s ex boyfriend, David Onstott came by to see Kelly May Lunde. He and Sarah argued and he put her in a chokehold, which killed her. Her body was found partly clothed in a fishpond.
In 1997, Allison Brown was found murdered and sexually molested. Her killer was Willie Crain. Crain had known Allison’s mother.
Recently in Iowa, Jetseta Gage (10 years old), who was mentally challenged, was abducted by Roger Bentley. He had been a friend of the families, and even was working on the mom’s car. Her mom was at classes, when Jetseta’s brother saw her in Bentley’s pick up truck around 8:15 PM. The grandmother went to check on the girl around 8:30 PM and found her missing.
It is sick that our nation is allowing these men more than one opportunity to prey on defenseless children. Florida congress has recently passed the Jessica Lunsford Act, which says that convicted child molesters will get a minimum of 25 years in prison, and have to wear an electronic, ankle, tracking device. Personal, I believe castration would work better. But at least the Florida Government is willing to take care of its children since the parents seems to be lacking in that area. Why aren’t these parents taking care, protecting their children? Three of the girls I posted about, moms’ were friends with the sexual predators. How could they allow men like that around their children? I believe the parents hold partial responsibility. Children rely on their parents to protect them. In this case, they failed.
With five kids, my parents managed to keep track of all of us. Even when my sister, Kristin, and I would try to run away; we’d never make it past the front yard. One could make an argument that it is the break down of the family that allows sexual predators like this an opening. None of those children came from a stable two family home. I wish people could look at this and see what happens when we allow laws to slide. Whitney Houston sings “I believe Children are Our Future.” If this is true then why aren’t we protecting their lives? It is bad enough the men like Couey, Onstott, Cain, Bentley, and countless others to violate children in the worst possible way to begin with, but how can we live with ourselves as a nation to allow them to do it twice?
